People around the Hull area 40 years ago in 1984
How time flies ...

In this collection of photos from the Hull Daily Mail archive, we can see people from around Hull and the East Riding - then, of course, known as North Humberside - at places from schools to workplaces back in 1984.
Nationally, this was the year when major industrial action involving miners in the British coal industry began in an attempt to prevent closures of 'uneconomic' pits.
It also saw the first flight of a Virgin Atlantic plane, the birth of Prince Harry, and an IRA assassination attempt on members of the Conservative government, including Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher, in a bombing in Brighton. Meanwhile, Band Aid's charity single Do They Know It's Christmas? was first released and became Christmas number one.
